Astronomy among Arabs and Muslims

Astronomy among Arabs and Muslims

Dr. Abdul Karim Ibrahim Al-Samak

The Almighty said {They ask you about the crescents. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj."} Al-Baqarah verse (189).

Astronomy is the science concerned with the cosmic space, its stars, planets, suns, moons, and constellations. Arabs before Islam knew this by nature, naming more than three hundred stars. They used stars as navigational guides in the deserts as noted in the Quran {And landmarks. And by the stars they are guided.} Surah Al-Nahl verse (16). Pre-Islamic poetry preserved this knowledge.

Dr. Fuat Sezgin and his book (Astronomy):

Professor Dr. Fuat Sezgin passed away at 94, having spent most of his life researching Islamic heritage. His encyclopedic work ""History of Arabic Heritage"" highlighted the efforts of Muslim scientists in medicine, chemistry, and astronomy. He was awarded the King Faisal International Prize in 1979. Sezgin founded the Institute for the History of Arabic-Islamic Sciences at Frankfurt University. His studies showed that Arabic stellar names are original and were adopted by international scientific centers.

In conclusion, Muslims freed astronomy from superstition and magic, turning it into a physical science controlled by laws and the power of the Creator.
