Noura Shuqair: Literature expands the child''s imagination and increases his perceptions

The visual artist, Dr. Noura bint Abdulhamid Shuqair, a researcher in arts education and museums, emphasized that children''s literature expands the child''s imagination and increases his perceptions, and that it works to modify behavior or develop a specific skill in children such as: improving linguistic skills and building a friendly, respectful environment in school or at home as well.

This came during an evening she held entitled: (What do we write for children?) via the Instagram account of the King Abdulaziz Public Library, which is from a series of lectures on children''s literature for the year 2021 within the cultural program of the library that works to highlight child culture, and related arts, drawings, reading and stories for children and children''s literature in general.

Dr. Noura Shuqair spoke in her lecture about several themes, including: How do we find the appropriate subject to write about the child? And how do the surrounding environment and events affect our choices of the subject?

She also discussed, within the themes of the lecture: using the exploratory method to find a suitable subject for the child. The lecturer explained the importance of children''s literature and the importance of its use by many educators or specialists for various purposes such as: behavior modification or developing a specific skill in children like improving linguistic skills and building a friendly, respectful environment in school or at home, expanding the child''s imagination, increasing his perceptions and opening doors before him towards a better future.

Dr. Noura Shuqair stated: The child needs children''s stories as much as he needs fun and play, as he finds in them a vent for the energies within him. Children''s literature plays an important role in education because it provides knowledge and entertainment. It represents an ideal model of "educational entertainment," so writing for children needs the person to be at a high level of awareness of the importance of writing for children, and familiar with literary, educational and social fields.

She emphasized that writing for children is more difficult and more complex than writing for adults despite the deceptive simplicity in its appearance. She stressed the importance of children''s literature being written in a style that combines fun and benefit, because the child by nature tends towards what is enjoyable and closer to play and cannot be addressed in a serious style like writing for adults, but the child''s age group must be taken into account.

Dr. Noura Shuqair concluded her lecture by saying that writing for children does not only need talent but science and talent together in addition to a great look at what has been written and published and also using the opinions of experts in this field.
