Taken 86 years a during the Hajj season.. Rare photos in King Abdulaziz Public Library of the Holy Kaaba, the Prophet's Mosque, and the city of Jeddah

The King Abdulaziz Public Library forms an Arab Islamic knowledge center, with everything these words mean. With this cultural image in which it cares about everything that would enhance Arab Islamic history and present its bright civilized image in various international forums, it plays a major role in activating civilized depth, and provides researchers with an integrated system of research and scientific spaces that motivate them to innovate new and original studies and enhance the radiance of history and the presence of heritage in contemporary memory.

Among the holdings of King Abdulaziz Public Library is a collection of rare photos documenting multiple scenes from the Hajj of the year 1354 AH, corresponding to 1936 AD, to add to its special holdings of Hajj, Umrah, Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Madinah Al-Munawwarah a new record of rare photos, as the library works on documenting contemporary Saudi history and the developmental works the Kingdom has provided since its founding at the level of roads, constructions, buildings, and the expansion of the Two Holy Mosques in service of the pilgrims of the House of d and its visitors from the east and west of the earth. The Kingdom is the leader of the Islamic world, and it is the place full of the roots of Arab civilization and the fragrance of Islamic civilization in Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Madinah Al-Munawwarah, as it is the center of the Islamic world and its Qibla.

The photo collection includes:

  • Some Egyptian female pilgrims exiting the Jeddah Customs Gate upon their arrival.
  • Members of the Egyptian Honor Mission in 1936
  • The Holy Kaaba
  • Pilgrims in Mina after descending from Arafat
  • Pilgrims landing at Jeddah Port
  • Pilgrims descending from Arafat
  • Providing drinking water (Siqaya)
  • Minaret of the Prophet's Mosque
  • A street in Madinah Al-Munawwarah
  • Camel caravan, pilgrims resting
  • A street in Madinah Al-Munawwarah
  • One of the gates of the Holy Mosque – Bab Ali
  • A drinking water spring in Madinah Al-Munawwarah

These photos form a number of historical scenes that highlight a group of places in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah, and show the great developmental distance between the state of Hajj sites in the year 1936, four years after the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and what we glimpse today of a great modern difference in the various technical and civilized services that the Kingdom provides to the pilgrims of the Sacred House of d, from the extension of roads and bridges, the construction of hotels and tents on the latest global styles, and the expansion of the Two Holy Mosques, an unprecedented expansion throughout history that highlights the Kingdom's care for the Hajj ritual and the service of the pilgrims of the Sacred House of d, whose hearts long from everywhere in the world to perform the rituals of Hajj and Umrah, and to live in moments of faith that may only be repeated once in a lifetime, as those who can find a way to the House of d perform Hajj from various parts of the world.

King Abdulaziz Public Library possesses a photo archive, considered one of the rarest photo collections in the world, numbering (8100) individual automated photographs or collections preserved in albums taken by the most famous photographers of the East and the Arab region since the beginnings of solar photography in 1740 AD, in addition to photos taken by travelers, ship captains, military personnel, envoys, consuls and politicians who visited the Arab region since the middle of the last century until the beginnings of the current century. This historical archive of photos is considered one of the most unique sources in the world that embodies the image of the Arab region in the past, and it records some important landmarks in the Kingdom in addition to documenting some religious places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Madinah Al-Munawwarah and historical and archaeological sites.

Knowledge in today's world constitutes a difficult number in the space of civilization, development and science. No nations weave their civilization without knowledge, and their development does not occur except with renewed, diverse, rich and effective science. From this standpoint, King Abdulaziz Public Library performs diverse and wise cultural and cognitive roles.
