In recent decades, Saudi women have achieved great accomplishments in various scientific, academic, literary and artistic fields, since the start of the stage of their formal education in 1960 AD with the establishment of the General Presidency for Girls' Education. It began first with primary schools, then middle institutes, then general education, higher education and foreign scholarship programs. The percentage of educated Saudi women in 2019 reached 91%, and Saudi women ranked first in the Arab world and tenth globally in terms of education among 20 countries according to the Spectator Index. Saudi women focused in the beginnings of education on emotional writings such as poetry, story and novel, and leading names emerged like: Samira Khashoggi, Soraya Al-Arid, Fawzia Abu Khalid, Badia Kashghari, Hind Baghaffar and others, fitting the nature of Saudi society at the start of the renaissance. Subsequently, Saudi women turned to practicing fine art, journalism, then moving heavily into new poetry genres and the novel, then practicing various administrative and functional professions, followed by wide academic expansion in the last twenty years until a special university for Saudi women was established, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, the largest women's university in the Middle East.
