This museum in the heart of Kuala Lumpur is the largest Islamic art museum in Southeast Asia and one of the largest in the world. It was opened in December 1998, occupying 30,000 square meters. Its collection includes over 7,000 pieces across 12 galleries. The museum aims to represent the Islamic world realistically, from small jewelry to large models like the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. It also features Ottoman artifacts and over 200 rare Islamic manuscripts, including 30 copies of the Quran from the Ming Dynasty. The museum has a traveling exhibition called "Melodies and Verses" showing Persian calligraphy. Its collection isn't limited to the Middle East but includes artifacts from China, India, and the Malay world. The Indian gallery focuses on the Mughal Empire (1526-1828). The Chinese gallery displays Islamic art from Western and Southern China, including Quranic scrolls. The Malay gallery shows textiles with floral and fruit motifs. The jewelry gallery features pieces from Turkestan to North Africa, particularly Mughal Indian jewelry. The arms gallery includes steel swords and daggers encrusted with ld and gems, including famous Damascus swords and Ottoman firearms. The metalwork gallery features ld and silver coins and seals.
