The house where Agatha Christie lived for 40 years... for sale now

The home of prolific novelist Dame Agatha Christie, which has long been located on the riverbank, has entered the British real estate market targeting a value of more than £2.75 million ($3.8 million).

According to the report translated by Ahwal Al-Ma'rifah magazine, the veteran mystery novel writer lived in Winterbrook House, on the banks of the Thames in Oxfordshire, for more than 40 years, from 1934 until her death in 1976, according to a press release from listing agent Savills. The five-bedroom house offers a chance for someone to own a piece of literary history, according to Stephen Christie-Miller, head of residential sales at Savills Henley. Christie "wrote some of her best-selling novels at the house, and it is believed that Winterbrook itself was the model for Danemead - [her character] Miss Marple's home in the village of St. Mary Mead." The sellers of the house, Gre,r Kleinknecht and Karen Holtermann, owned the property for 20 years and were unaware of the famous former owner when they first moved in. "We discovered it later," Mr. Kleinknecht said in the statement. "Clearly Winterbrook House has a wealth of history... it is a great honor to live in a place that has a special place in the hearts of many." He said the house was a "very happy place for Agatha Christie and so it was for our family, and we will of course be sad to leave it." The couple bought the house in 2002 for £1.24 million, according to registration records. This three-story house has retained a host of period features that give it character and charm, and is full of high ceilings and large windows, according to Mr. Christie-Miller. The grounds around the house extend 5 acres sloping down to the Thames. Over the course of her career, Christie wrote 66 detective novels and created famous characters like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, both of whom appeared in many of her works, such as "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile". She died in 1976 at the age of 85.
