The writer Abdullah bin Khamis gifts the Saudi reader 80,000 books

In an interview conducted by "Ahwal Al-Ma'rifa" magazine with the writer Abdullah bin Khamis in the month of Muharram in the year 1417 AH, he revealed the status of the book in Saudi society and the interest of the rulers in establishing public libraries so that culture and knowledge are within everyone's reach.

The Book is Within Everyone's Reach

The writer Abdullah bin Khamis said during his interview with Ahwal Al-Ma'rifa magazine (I donated my library because I believe that the book is not the property of anyone and must be within everyone's reach to serve the entire community. Thus the book achieves the desired goal of its presence on the shelves. The book belongs to every person who wants to research and educate himself. The library that I worked hard to collect and stayed up for surely has a good status that will benefit the reader when it is outside the wall of my house.

Largest Libraries

I consider my personal library one of the largest libraries, and I have collected it during a long journey of research that exceeded 50 years. it is a library full and includes treasures of language, heritage, literature, history, and geography books. The contents of my library are carefully selected and with deliberation and attainment of science and literature. Years were spent for it and some of these contents came to me through gifting and most of them by purchase. These contents reached about 80,000 books, including volumes and various parts.

In Books is the Heritage of the Ancestors

People's turning away from the book and their turning towards other aspects and interests other than reading and browsing is in fact an undesirable phenomenon. Care must be taken for the book, for reading, and for everything that brings people closer to science. For the book contains science and culture, and this does not prevent them from taking knowledge from other means that time has brought, but as much as possible and not with their full energy. We do not want people to turn away from the book which contains their culture, for in the book is the heritage of their fathers and grandfathers and the summary of their thought.

The Book is the Key to Civilization and Development

Culture and science come through books and their acquisition, and the status achieved by the owner of the book. There is no place for science, culture, literature, and research except through the book, and through it the human becomes an achiever of science, culture, and research. The book is the key to civilization and development, and the book has a good position in our country, and from here came the establishment of public libraries and the interest of the rulers in establishing public libraries so that culture and knowledge are within people's reach. Public libraries are a civilizational necessity that increases our cognitive attainment and our culture, which is a necessity for the development and prosperity of society.

Translation Awakens the Nation and Builds its Renaissance

Translation contributes to moving the nation from one situation to another.. Translation since ancient times has served society culturally and many works were translated from and into Arabic, and it had a great impact on the development of human thought. It also had a role in awakening the nation and building its renaissance. Our Arabic language has its status and loftiness, and even if we are not quenched yet from its sources, it is the language of the Quran and it is the language of literature and poetry. Thousands of books and research were authored in it that lit for the world and for the nations their civilization. We must take care of our language and literature first. This does not prevent browsing global cultures and literatures because of the benefit in that.

The culture and trends that I took and studied and used to take are diverse and multiple. I studied the geography of the Arabian Peninsula and researched in several aspects, including a book I authored about its mountains and named it (Dictionary of the Mountains of the Arabian Peninsula), and another about its valleys (Dictionary of the Valleys of the Peninsula), in addition to the book (Al-Majaz between Al-Yamamah and Al-Hijaz).
