A vision on the death of the West and the rise of Islam .. German thinker Murad Hoffman diagnoses the roots of Western civilization and its contemporary features

The dean of German Orientalism, Dr. Annemarie Schimmel, expressed the personality of the German thinker Murad Hoffman and his thought and scientific convictions while presenting his book, which caused a great uproar in most Western countries, that he lived the creed of Islam with firm faith, by saying: "I claim that the reader will be amazed or astonished, or rather: shocked by the clear position of Dr. Murad Hoffman, for he is firm-footed on the ground of Islam that the ancestors knew, as the Prophet conveyed and as the Companions and followers applied."

Hoffman sought to bring his vision of Islam closer to the Western environment, which is what he tried to do with writings, dialogues, debates and interviews over forty years of his life in Islam.

In his book: "German Thinker Murad (Wilfried) Hoffman: His Vision on the Death of the West and the Rise of Islam" (Third Sector Center for Consultations, Taif, First Edition 2022), Dr. Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Salloumi highlights Hoffman's vision of Western civilization, his boldness in diagnosing it, and his courage in criticizing its roots, with his strong belief that Islam is the civilizational alternative for the world in its present and future, and the two topics in what the author indicates are the two parts of the subject and the basis of the book.

The book, which is in (444) pages, includes a reading of Hoffman's vision of death and rise, which are two interconnected topics for Hoffman, and what he said about this: "It seems at first glance that there is a degree of asymmetry in the phrase (West and Islam), the West - which is basically a geographical concept - is often placed in opposition to Islam - the religion, but this asymmetry is logical because it is no longer possible to equate the West with religion."

The book consists of five chapters carrying the following titles: Hoffman and the Foresight and Death of Western Civilization, in which the author quotes a large collection of Hoffman's texts that deal with religion and modernity, and the death of the West from the intellectual side, and the fluctuation and replacement of the West's , and the West's agitation by the results of material sciences. The second chapter carries the title: "Hoffman and the factors of death of Western civilization" and the titles of the rest of the chapters came as follows: Hoffman and the foresight of the rise of Islam, the civilizational nature of Islam and the factors of attraction in it according to Hoffman, sources of quotations: reading and definition of the ten books of Hoffman, where the author quoted about thirteen sets of quotations to clarify Hoffman's vision of Islam and Western civilization.

The author believes that the importance of this research and writing on this subject in its two parts exclusively with Hoffman is because the West with its countries and civilization in peace and war is a major player in international events and world issues, and even largely controlling the world's political and economic life, and an effective influencer with its ideologies, organizations and media on religions, cultures and other of social life, which confirms the importance of diagnosing the rise and fall of the West and its civilization for proper dealing with the movement of history, especially since Western civilization and its are subjected to sharp discussions among intellectual spectra, where the struggle for survival of this civilization or its countries is a subject of great discussion, as well as what Western civilization with its is exposed to of difficult examination in life's arenas, for example the disintegration of family and social relationships that portends the demise of the family.

The author believes, accordingly, that there is an observed failure of Western countries in dealing with violations of international law and achieving global peace and achieving human rights and justice, with the brutality of the globalized economy.

The optimistic vision of the rise of Islamic civilization comes from Hoffman, who is a Western philosopher, diplomat and politician who lived international relations in their practical details, which enabled him to have a clear view of the West from close up. Since announcing his conversion to Islam in 1980, he has written with deep philosophical thought about Islam. The author has presented a large collection of quotations from Hoffman's ten books, most notably: Diary of a Muslim German, Islam as an Alternative, Islam in the year 2000, Journey to Mecca, Islam in the Third Millennium, Islam as a Muslim German Sees it, The Future of Islam in the West and East, and other books.

In this book we are before a clear issue and a prominent moderate Muslim Western personality, which makes the subject of this book closer to listing the truth and facts from his words, without analysis or explanation.

The book is based on the idea of quotation more than being an analytical study of the entirety of Hoffman's ideas or writing about his personality, but rather the book is concerned with a future foresight for human civilization.

It is noteworthy that Murad Hoffman is a German thinker, born on July 6, 1931 in Aschaffenburg, Germany, studied law at the University of Munich, and received a doctorate in law from Harvard University in 1961 and worked in the German Foreign Ministry, converted to Islam in 1980 and published ten books on Islam and Islamic civilization, and passed away on January 13, 2020 after enriching the intellectual library with a large collection of works translated into several international languages.
