In the Makkah Library, 70,000 titles of rare books, manuscripts, and newspapers.. Great efforts to restore heritage books and old newspapers

The reading hall at the Library of the Grand Mosque in Makkah contains nearly 70,000 titles, making it one of the most important libraries in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and one of the most prominent sources for knowledge seekers and researchers, used as valuable references for Master's and PhD theses. Since its inception, the library has enjoyed great attention from the Kingdom, making it a treasure for endowment collections, rare books and manuscripts, and books of various sciences. It contains rare manuscripts and publications, including old newspapers that were restored by the Restoration and Sterilization Department; which aims to preserve and maintain information vessels in the Library of the Grand Mosque in Makkah so that beneficiaries can benefit from them and view the treasures of knowledge within their pages.

To facilitate for researchers and access to scientific sources, it follows an automated indexing system in the cloud platform, which enables searching by different elements such as title, author, and required subject headings. The Restoration and Sterilization Department at the library makes strenuous efforts to maintain the books in the reading hall and the periodicals and newspapers hall, preserving them by sterilizing them using an ozone device—an environmentally friendly device that is not harmful to humans. It converts oxygen gas into ozone gas, which in turn helps sterilize books and eliminate insects and microorganisms within 8 hours. Damage in books is also repaired by inspecting them on shelves, and books are restored through various binding processes depending on the damage. After completion of sterilization and repair operations, they are returned to the reading and research platforms.

In the year 2021, the restoration process began for Al-Bilad newspaper issues 1381 - 1382 AH found in the library's exhibition. 462 pages were restored by assembling torn parts, fixing them in their correct place, and repairing cracks using Japanese paper and thermal cautery to protect them from damage and loss of parts. 650 manuscripts from the collection of Sheikh Abdullah bin Humaid were also indexed. These efforts preserve the cultural and cognitive heritage of the Kingdom.
