Picasso, Miró and Banksy... Paintings for sale at Christie's London auction for millions
Christie's London is holding an auction on March 23 for a number of paintings including Picasso's 'Femme nue couchée au Collier' and Joan Miró's 'Peinture' in addition to the elusive British street artist Banksy's 'Game Changer' among other artworks.
Paintings by Pablo Picasso, René Magritte and Joan Miró, as well as Banksy's tribute to the British National Health Service, are among a selection of artworks to be offered this month in Christie's 20th Century Art Auction, according to a report translated by Ahwal Al-Ma'rifa.
The auction, taking place in London on March 23, features 55 lots, including Picasso's "Femme nue couchée au collier", estimated at £9 million - £15 million ($12.50 million - $21 million).
Another painting by the Spanish artist, "Femme assise dans un fauteuil noir", sold for between £6 million and £9 million.
Other pieces include a self-portrait by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Amedeo Modigliani's "Portrait de photographe Dilevsky" and Andy Warhol's "Three Self-Portraits".
"It is all about 20th century art plus some 21st century works... the works for sale are mostly fresh to the market which is what our clients want," Keith Gill, co-head of the 20th Century Evening Sale, told Reuters.
Asked about the impact of Brexit on art sales in London, he said: "As far as we can tell, our sales are ,ing from strength to strength."
British artist Banksy's "Game Changer," which depicts a boy playing with a nurse as a superhero instead of Batman and Spiderman, is estimated at £2.5 million - £3.5 million.
The painting, unveiled last year at University Hospital Southampton, paid tribute to frontline workers in Britain's National Health Service (NHS) in their fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Proceeds from the sale will , to the NHS.
Christie's will also hold its Art of the Surreal auction on the same day.
Highlights include René Magritte's "Le mois des vendanges", estimated at £10 million - £15 million, and Joan Miró's "Peinture", priced at £9 million - £14 million among 27 lots.
