London is an open museum... and now a colorful city

London is an open museum... and now a colorful city

Many buildings in London are clearly works of art. But what if you turned those embodied works of art into works of art colored with a brush?

This is what architect Christian Coop does, by drawing stunning watercolors of some of the beautiful buildings, which you might not otherwise notice.

Coop says that "understanding buildings has always been important" to him. "Their materiality, proportion and detail" are vital parts of his daily work. So he started sketching and painting them - as a way to remember the buildings, and to allow him to understand the city better.

Each pencil and watercolor piece takes about six hours on average from start to finish.

On his popular Instagram account freehandlines, he doesn't just show the drawings of the buildings alone; in the descriptive summary of the painting, there is a brief history telling the story of the drawn design structure, to quench the viewers' intellectual thirst.

Coop says that every "building has a story that shapes it." And it is these stories that draw him to buildings. This is because stories are what create a city, not just the bricks and mortar that inhabit it.
