Launch of the National Plan for Collecting, Documenting, and Archiving the Assets and Elements of Cultural Heritage

The Ministry of Culture launched the national plan project for collecting, documenting, archiving, and managing cultural heritage elements as a national initiative within the Saudi Culture Memory Center. It aims to preserve the rich fabric of cultural heritage in the Kingdom, building a memory for Saudi culture through a comprehensive survey of material and intangible treasures that form the baseline of national identity. The center works through this project on a roadmap to define and preserve cultural heritage assets. Heritage is a prominent element in the Kingdom, which hosts Arab and Islamic heritage, representing a living inherited cultural geography where the Arabic language and literary heritage began. Cultural centers abound in the Kingdom, such as the King Fahd National Library, King Abdulaziz Public Library, and university libraries, alongside institutions like the Hamad Al-Jasser Cultural Center. Cultural heritage includes both material (archaeology, urban heritage) and intangible (oral literature, performing arts, traditional crafts). The Ministry works with individual and institutional stakeholders through workshops to build a strong baseline for Saudi heritage. The Saudi Culture Memory Center was established in February 2021 to guide these efforts and create a reliable digital resource to ensure that heritage is not only remembered but thrives.
