The British poet who came close to death and wrote about it

The British poet who came close to death and wrote about it

Famous poet, broadcaster and children's book author Michael Rosen was infected with coronavirus a year a and spent 48 days in intensive care. His new collection of prose poems attempts to understand the stage he went through, according to a report published by the British Guardian.

The British newspaper reports that when people stop Michael Rosen in his local neighborhood, Muswell Hill, north London, to ask him how he is, which they do often these days, he answers: "Well, I'm not dead!"

As is now known, the former Children's Laureate spent 48 days in intensive care, after contracting coronavirus almost a year a.

He went to the hospital at the end of March as one of the country's favorite children's writers and emerged as a national treasure, as his poem "These are the Hands" which he wrote to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the NHS in 2008, became an unofficial anthem for health service workers who were facing the first wave of the pandemic.

In a reference to his most famous book "We're ing on a Bear Hunt", teddy bears were placed in windows, so children could see them during their daily walks during lockdown.

Rosen was not fully aware of these tributes he received, he was in a deep coma; "a kind of pre-death, similar to the time of our departure," he says now.

People were reading this poem by this dead man, but he wasn't actually dead, he was lying like a corpse on the road in Whittington Hospital.

The 74-year-old writer is very much alive on Zoom where he appears, after a few technical glitches on the screen, as energetic as ever, his conversation a collection of malice and stories, ranging from King Lear to last night's football match, even if names escape him occasionally.

During his long literary career, he completed many important books, including the two books he wrote in response to the death of his second son Eddie (he has five children, including Eddie, and two step-sons) from meningitis when he was 18 years old a little over 20 years a: Carrying the Elephant, a mixture of prose and poetry, and Michael Rosen's Sad Book, illustrated by Blake.

Rosen writes: "I loved him very, very much, but he died anyway."
