Sarah Al-Abdulkarim: Plot, drawings and comedy are among the artistic elements that attract children

Dr. Sarah bint Omar Al-Abdulkarim, member of the Human Rights Commission, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Early Childhood at the College of Education at King Saud University, confirmed that there are artistic elements attractive to children in the field of children's literature, such as the existence of an easy (plot) in the story that unites the child with the character of heroism (the hero of the story) in addition to interesting drawings and comedy. She explained that among the cultural factors that hinder the development of children's literature is the lack of a culture of children visiting libraries, and that public libraries have not taken their right from the media and promotion and that the family has not made its visit to libraries one of the basics of our life or culture. This came during an evening for Dr. Sarah Al-Abdulkarim with the Children's Library entitled: (Traits of Attractive Children's Stories) where Dr. Sarah spoke about several themes, including: characteristics of a successful child, traits of an unattractive story, and she also dealt within the themes of the lecture with cultural factors that hinder the development of children's literature. The lecture explained the importance of children's literature and the importance of its use by many educators or specialists such as: correcting behavior and developing a specific skill like improving linguistic skills and also the importance of traits of attractive children's stories and that the message must be indirect and is the best way to give the child and traditions. The doctor sent a message to authors, as she sees that those who succeeded are those who wrote from the child's perspective, not the adult's, and she saw that it is important for the treatment to be implicit, undirected and non-injurious and that comedy is the gateway to children's storybooks and is the most important feature of children's books and is rare and scarce with us. And the use of imagination without limits except for religious limits and lying, and whenever imagination meets comedy it is better and the writing must be suitable for the age group, noting that the educator practices a high degree of guardianship and control, and that (free reading) we removed the word free from it because of the educator's choice for the child of the read story, stressing that the child should be left to choose his story himself, and the child's psychology must be known and understood and no guardianship practiced over him, and the best education for is to represent them in ourselves (the role model) because its impact is greater. Dr. Sarah Al-Abdulkarim concluded her lecture by pointing out that among the cultural factors that hinder the development of children's literature is that the book has not taken its right in our society and one of the great problems is that we "do not read" to our children, and she stressed the necessity of reading books and stories to the child, and that this reading will change his life and the educator's life from a psychological, emotional and linguistic point of view.
