Zakia Al-Otaibi and repetitive oppositional expression in her short-short stories
The short-short story takes us, for sure, to an artistic destination first, because it is an experimental story or rather because it is an experimental narrative in the first place that arose in the last four decades, and increased in various aesthetic forms, where it began to form its aesthetic ground in its multiple contexts and atmospheres. Hence, the focus on reading the dense narrative mechanisms in this story style is of importance as it reveals and clarifies the mechanisms of this art and how it narrates ideas and subjects, and how it captures the bright vision in a very condensed narrative work that may be summarized in one line or one sentence. Zakia Al-Otaibi in her stories focuses on the artistic dimensions first, and on sensing their impact on forming her narrative awareness. Among the mechanisms that the storyteller relies on is the repetitive expression that achieves an act followed by another counter, opposing or different reaction, or agreeing sometimes, which is the expression with: "Whenever." Whenever something happens (an act) .... something (another act) happens. This stylistic structure exists in more than one story, including these expressions and stories from the collection: "Rain that does not come": Whenever the sound of her pulse faded in the crowd of life, a special pulse stopped her to tell her that it was still alive. Whenever he tried his pen's fitness, butterflies flocked to him and burned with his awareness. And she thickens whenever she evaporates, and evaporates after she thickens. His father had always shamed him for his failure, whenever he compared them, whenever he crossed him he shrank! She was afraid of losing him, so she intensified her siege of him, whenever he was absent from her. This is how she is whenever death passes her to someone else. Whenever the glitter of wonder and expectation faded in his depths, he t bored with life. Whenever life bloomed in his soul, time swept him to a new bank. Whenever he lit a fire for joy, his desire extinguished it. Whenever luck knocked on her door, she blocked it with her impossible requirements. Whenever the first rebelled against the second, she convinced her that the beautiful part of this life is not available to us. Whenever ice covered the edges of their lives, they looked for a hole to slip through to bathe in the sun. Whenever he tried to breathe indifference, he choked on the void. Whenever they pushed to hurt him, they fell into the mud of their intentions.
