More than a vision... deeper than silence – Abdulmohsen Al-Hogail defines the features of the other in Saudi poetry

The E and the Other are two faces for one coin, or they are two faces for one image, and for someone to be able to define the features of his self he must define the features of the other relative to him, and this other/different its features are defined according to the race or religion or even the country, and through this definition the image of the other becomes clear.

Like this Dr. Abdulmohsen Al-Hogail contemplates in his newest critical books that address the effect of the other, or the employment of the image of the other in Saudi poetry, and the title of the book came as follows: "More than a vision .. deeper than silence: the other in Saudi poetry - 1351-1434 AH).

For during more than 80 years Dr. Al-Hogail defines the field of Saudi poetry work in reading the other, and representing it, and the book issued from the Arab Literature Center for publishing and distribution in its first edition 1442 AH / 2021 AD (348 pages) included two parts: dimensions of the presence of the other, types of summoning the other, and under these two titles the author discussed through chapters of the book and its sections a group from the issues and questions addressing: the human dimension, and social and emotional and civilizational, and fine from direction of the poetic image, and summoning the place, and summoning people, and groups and myths, and fine employment.

Summoning creativity:

Al-Hogail believes that talking about the other and summoning it in creativity were not absent in our literary heritage, for in the pre-Islamic poetry documentation for the connection of Arabs with several peoples like Persians and Romans and Indians and Abyssinians, and the images of the other varied in presence and absence according to its relationships with the Arab and the degree of its friction with him, and in all literary eras the Arabs mixed with other nations in a mixture that affected the poetry in its thematic directions and its fine formation, and supplied it with its ideas and enriched it with its contents.

And the Saudi poetry – as Al-Hogail confirms – is a link in the chain of contemporary Arab poetry, connected to the heritage of its nation anciently and modernly, so there was for this phenomenon its presence in it as the Saudi poets summoned the other in various images and different ways.

Image of the other:

Dr. Al-Hogail shows that the other is present in the depiction of the Saudi poet, and uses the image mostly to serve the dominant idea on the text, and the Saudi poet employs techniques from them: comparison or paradox or symbol, to serve his poetic achievement, and the research discusses in the second part and through four chapters: types of summoning the other and that for the sake of defining how the Saudi poet uses a certain type and employs it in his poem.

And the poet relied in his book, and it is originally a research for PhD, on (240) source and reference, that formed the critical research support which he relied on in lighting the phenomenon of the other in Saudi poetry, focusing on the poetic contents that a large number from the Saudi poets spread whether from those who belong to the classical and romantic and emotional current, or from those who belong to the poetic modernity current, and among them: Mohammed Al-Fahd Al-Issa, and Saad Al-Bawardi, and Abdullah bin Idris, and Mohammed Al-Sanousi, and Mohammed Hassan Faki, and Ghazi Al-saibi, and Hamad Al-Asous, and Saleh Al-Zahrani, and Ahmed Al-Saleh, and Saad Al-Humaidin, and Hassan Al-Qurashi, and Ali Al-Dumaini, and Abdullah Al-Siyakhan, and Jassim Al-Sahih, and Fatima Al-Qarni, and Hind Al-Mutairi, and Ibrahim Al-Wafi and others.

This book sought to reveal the features of the expression about the other, and to prove the interest of the Saudi poet in the other and his participation in its sorrows and interaction with its ambitions and als and reinforcing its victories.

As it monitored the feeling of the Saudi poet with the civilization of the other and with its scientific and literary and artistic achievements from one side and the expression about some of its behaviors and ethics from a second side. and the author provided through that a group from analytical readings that are consistent with the title of the book in a large group from poems and collections issued during the time span which he reads through stages of Saudi poetry through various decades, monitoring the poetic visions and expressions and aesthetics.
