Towers or high eyes overlooking the cities? .. Eiffel, Pisa the leaning, Shanghai and Khalifa .. Each capital has its tower
It is the journey of the ground building towards the clouds, a long journey that hasn't stopped throughout the history of mankind .. rising above the earth for the sake of embracing the sky even if in a symbolic, metaphorical way. Such was the view of the ancient civilizations of Greece, the Phoenicians, Babylon and Pharaonic of the sky that embodied in dozens of high buildings such as in temples, obelisks, pyramids and other high buildings.
Buildings then turned into towers, and according to historians, the "Insula" buildings in ancient Rome, which were built before the middle of the eighth century BC, may be the first idea of the high towers we know today. This dream continued to reach the construction of the "Burj Khalifa," the tallest tower built by man in history, and then evolved until we become interested in the beauty of the shape of these towers and their engineering, their aesthetic characteristics and their components from inside and outside.
The word "tower" (burj) in the dictionary of meanings is a noun, and the plural is towers (abraj) and brruj, it is the fortress and house built on the city wall, and on the wall of the fort, a high building on a circular or square shape and it is independent or a part of a great building. The towers were mentioned in the Holy Quran, accompanied by the adjective (high), in addition to being the name of the Sura no. (85) according to the order of the Quran, which is Sura: Al-Buruj, and from another side, towers mean the locations of some astrological signs. This illustrates a lot of the uniqueness of this type of buildings and their distinction and difference, and their civilizational dimension.
High Towers:
Towers reveal the beauty of cities, their dimensions and planning, through the extent of the overlook that those who ascend can extend as far as the eye can see, they are like high eyes that see everything, which is what stimulated many cities in the world to build their towers, especially in capitals and major cities. Among the most famous global towers: Petronas Twin Towers - Malaysia, Shanghai Tower - China, Eiffel Tower - France, the CN Tower - Canada, the Leaning Tower of Pisa – Italy, Big Ben Clock Tower – Britain, Burj Khalifa - Emirates, the Diamond Tower in Jeddah, and the Holy Mosque clock tower. Also there are some small towers such as the Cairo Tower. Among other towers: Galata Tower in Istanbul, the Three Padas area in China, and Belém Tower located in the Portuguese capital Lisbon which is classified within the list of UNESCO World Heritage, and is considered with its construction and history a masterpiece since the sixteenth century, and one of Lisbon's most important and attractive landmarks for tourists. The tower formed a starting point for many Portuguese explorers during the Age of Discovery and its construction was completed in 1521. Qutub Minar near the Indian capital Delhi is considered a masterpiece and a model of Islamic arts in India. The tower was built at the beginning of the 13th century using red sandstone and includes the adjacent archaeological area an Alai Darwaza gate and two mosques, one of which is called "Quwwat-ul-Islam", it is the oldest in the northern India region. The three towers known as "Pada" are among the few architectures still preserved in China. The towers are located near the old historical city of Dali and have survived many natural disasters and wars. The central pada is considered one of the tallest temples in China.
Clouds on the Ground:
In establishing towers, the idea remains imaginary, the meeting of clouds with a ground building, and Burj Khalifa will not be the last of the highest towers in the world. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai rises 828 meters from the ground, which gave it the title of the tallest building in the world so far, and it combines fine art, engineering beauty and ancient heritage. As for the Big Ben tower, it is one of the most important landmarks that tourists are keen to visit in the British capital London, and one of the most prominent tourist landmarks around the world. Work began on the clock in 1856, and it was officially opened three years later on the third of June 1859. It is one of the world's most famous devices for measuring time, due to its extreme accuracy, therefore it is a symbol of universal time, and the name Big Ben is derived from the abbreviation of the name Benjamin Hall, the British Minister of Works at the time who oversaw the implementation of the clock project and the design of its tower. The clock, which weighs about 12.5 tons and is installed in the London Tower, is considered one of the most important tourist landmarks. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is considered one of the seven wonders of the world, and one of the most important tourist places intended by visitors to Italy. As for the Eiffel Tower, it is considered a symbol of Paris and France and one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Gustave Eiffel built the tower at a height of 300 meters and it remained the tallest tower in the world until 1930. Millions of tourists visit the tower annually making it the most visited site in the world ever. Perhaps the trend of some cities recently as in Riyadh, Dubai, Malaysia and Southeast Asian countries to inspire the idea of towers in residential and commercial buildings has become a tangible matter, which enhances the dream of the meeting of the earth with the clouds in an idea that was dreamy and realized by effect of urban and civilizational development.
